News sources
Where can you find reliable information about threats to democracy and actions to protect democracy? Traditional media sources are bowing to power and downplaying both the danger and the resistance. But a new information infrastructure is emerging in places like BlueSky, Substack and YouTube - and you can reach it, support it, and even get it delivered to your in-box.
(We've put a few recent articles that summarize the current situation on our How are things Going? page. For sources you can use to find the news for yourself, please keep reading.)
Here are some sources that you can trust. Most of them are available as a subscription delivering news into your email in-box. Many have free and paid options, and can be found on Substack and followed on BlueSky. Some also have podcasts and/or channels on YouTube. Subscribe to sites that give you good information. If you find them valuable, upgrade to paid subscriptions to support their work. To stay independent, these sources avoid advertising or corporate or party support.
We follow all of these; we start every day reading Heather Cox Richardson's letter, in our email in-box from her late-night publication the night before.
- Heather Cox Richardson: “Letters from an American: Historians are fond of saying that the past doesn’t repeat itself; it rhymes. To understand the present, we have to understand how we got here. That’s where this newsletter comes in. I’m a professor of American history. This is a chronicle of today’s political landscape, but because you can’t get a grip on today’s politics without an outline of America’s Constitution, and laws, and the economy, and social customs, this newsletter explores what it means, and what it has meant, to be an American."
- The Contrarian: "Democracy faces an unprecedented threat from an authoritarian movement built on lies and contempt for the rule of law. The first and most critical defense of democracy—a robust, independent free press—has been missing in action. Corporate and billionaire media owners have shied away from confrontation, engaged in false equivalence, and sought to curry favor with Donald Trump. It is hardly surprising that readers and viewers are fleeing from these outlets. Americans need an alternative. The Contrarian is that alternative: unflinching, unapologetic, and unwavering in its commitment to truth-telling."
- Democracy Docket: "Democracy Docket is the leading digital news platform dedicated to information, analysis and opinion about voting rights and elections in the courts. Founded by Marc Elias, a nationally recognized authority in voting rights, redistricting and law. In 2020, Marc led the historic legal effort to protect voting rights, winning over 60 lawsuits against the GOP’s efforts to suppress the vote, and continues to fight in court."
- Public Notice: "Independent, incisive coverage of US politics and media, right in your inbox five times a week."
- Popular Information: "Independent accountability journalism." “A must-read source of information and exposés about politics and government.” “True journalism, speaking truth to power daily.”
