Where can you spend – or not spend – your dollars to make a difference now?

Since late 2024, boycotts have re-emerged as an important tool in defending democracy. Some have been for a few days (e.g., Amazon), while others are on-going (e.g., Target). Some are aimed at companies because of their policies, and others are aimed at companies because of their owners' roles in undermining democracy (e.g., Jeff Bezos and The Washington Post).

Here are some resources to help you decide where to spend, or not spend:

  • Boycott MAGA NM: "Informing New Mexicans who choose to vote with their wallet."
  • The People's Union USA: Advance notice of boycotts nationwide. "Economic resistance is our frontline weapon. And behind that, we’ve got something they’ll never understand: resiliencestrengthand the will to endure. They raise prices, we stop spending. They ignore our voices, we cut their profits. They divide, we unite."
  • To avoid automatically getting your books from Amazon, use Libby to access e-books using your local library card, or Bookshop.org, whose goal is to"give readers the convenience of online shopping while supporting independent bookstores at the same time." (On our Looking more deeply page, all the books are linked to Bookshop.org, not Amazon.)
